Plan Now to Prevent Fairy Ring Next Year in Warm-Season Areas

Research has advanced our knowledge of fairy ring over the last decade and consistent control is now possible as long as preventive measures are implemented in the spring.

  • Causal agent is in the thatch/mat layer – Below ground the most common sign of fungal activity is a layer of white, brown-orange, or yellowish mycelia. Depth of fairy ring activity is usually near the upper thatch or mat layer in the root zone, but can be deeper at times. Depth of mycelia is used to determine the amount of irrigation needed to water in fungicide.
  • Management practices for fairy ring
    • Minimize thatch – a regular program of core aerification, vertical mowing, and frequent sand topdressing when turf is actively growing
    • Manage water, fertility and mowing heights – to maintain healthy turf, since stressed turf is most susceptible
    • Wetting agents – can improve water movement through thatch or mat layers and help manage localized dry spot (LDS), commonly associated with fairy ring fungi. However, DMI fungicides mixed with wetting agents can injure turf, so schedule wetting agent applications between those planned for fungicides.
    • Manage nematodes – the nematicide Indemnify® has application timings that match with those used for fairy ring. Tartan® Stressgard® targeted for fairy ring can be tank-mixed with Indemnify in early spring to limit nematode feeding and other root-related diseases like take-all root rot.
  • Fungicide options
    • Timing – apply first fungicide at 2" soil temps at 55-60°F (or 65-70°F in TX, FL, HI) on warm-season greens. Sequential applications are made on 28-day intervals (see tables below).
    • Tartan Stressgard – DMI fungicide for initial spring applications that offers preventive control of fairy ring and take-all root rot, plus the added plant health benefits of Stressgard.
    • Prostar® 70 WG – SDHI fungicide for preventive and curative control of fairy ring, and is also useful for prevention of mini ring.
    • Mirage® Stressgard – DMI fungicide with broad-spectrum activity against fairy ring, mini ring and take-all root rot, plus the plant health benefits of Stressgard.
    • Fairy Ring Program for Bermudagrass – Tartan Stressgard, Prostar and Mirage Stressgard are all used in a program with a satisfaction guarantee for greens that spans from the first application in spring to the end of summer.
