John Paige III

John Paige’s earliest childhood memories are of watching ants. He spent countless hours studying their taste preferences and pheromone trails. Now he has put that fascination to use for Bayer as a Senior Scientist for research and development in the Southeast and Caribbean. As such, he has a unique take on pest management and vector control.

Name:

John Paige III

Title:

Senior Scientist

Location:

Vero Beach, FL

Years in the industry:

34

What are your areas of expertise?

Field research and development of products and systems to manage urban pests and vectors

Why did you get into pest management?

My earliest memories in life were spent observing ants. I would watch them for hours, feed them different foods to see which they liked the best, erase their pheromone trail and time how long it took them to reestablish it. When I found out in high school that entomology was a major and could provide a very decent career, there was never any question about what I would do in life.

What’s your favorite thing about working for Bayer?

Bayer has the necessary resources, market size and expertise to create and develop innovative products for the pest management industry. And despite its massive size and global footprint, Bayer is a very "human" company.

Have you earned any awards or industry recognition of note?

Multiple awards through the years from Florida Pest Management Association, Florida Entomological Society, University of Florida Urban Entomological Society

What’s your favorite bug and why?

There are so many, it's difficult to decide. For sheer coolness, I would choose a dragonfly. It’s a predator, and everything about that insect is beautifully adapted to catching fast-moving prey on the wing!

What does “Science for a Better Life” mean to you?

Well, I suppose we would have to go back to the question of why I like working for Bayer. Science for a

Better Life is the very essence of being a "human" company.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I volunteer for the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida because I feel they saved our youngest son's life through their education outreach.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Hunting, fishing, scuba diving, spear fishing, lobster hunting, training bird dogs

What would you do if you weren’t in pest management?

I shudder at the thought…
