Snow Mold

Snow Mold
Pink snow mold (Microdochium nivale) occurs in cold wet weather with snow cover. Optimum conditions are periods of high humidity and temperatures ranging from 32-45°F. As snow recedes, patches 12" or less appear tan to bleached white, with perimeters appearing pink.

Gray snow mold (Typhula spp) is active at 32-42°F with extended snow cover (> 80 days). Look for light yellow to gray areas 3" - 12" in diameter. Matted turf progresses quickly to a grayish-white color; a 1-inch margin halo of grayish-white mycelial growth can appear.

Microdochium Patch

Microdochium PatchMicrodochium patch is especially problematic to annual bluegrass. Favorable conditions include wet conditions, maximum daytime temperature 45-60°F, shaded or poorly-drained locations, high soil pH and excessive nitrogen fertility. Look for small water-soaked spots, expanding and turning gray or tan with a red-brown or dark, greasy margin. Fluffy white mycelia are sometimes observed at the edge of the patches.
